Athens at night: things to do after dark
When the heat of the day fades and the Acropolis lights up, Athens becomes a different city. Here is what to see and do once the sun goes down.

Athens at night is one of the great pleasures of visiting the city. In the evening the temperature drops, the marble glows under floodlights and the streets fill with people heading to dinner. Many visitors spend their days at museums and ruins and then wonder what to do in Athens at night. The answer is: a lot. Here are the things we recommend, roughly in the order a good evening unfolds.
1. See the Acropolis lit up
The Parthenon is floodlit every night, and seeing it glowing above the rooftops is the defining image of Athens after dark. You do not need to be on the hill itself. Some of the best views are from below: the pedestrian walkway of Dionysiou Areopagitou, the streets of Thissio and the squares around Monastiraki all give you the Acropolis framed against a dark sky.
2. Catch the sunset from a hill
Athens is built around hills, and each gives a different view as the light fades.
- Lycabettus Hill: the highest point in the centre, with a sweeping view over the whole city to the sea. Walk up the paths or take the funicular.
- Filopappou Hill: pine trees, stone paths and a direct, slightly elevated view of the Acropolis. Quieter and very atmospheric.
- Areopagus Hill: the rocky outcrop right beside the Acropolis. Close, popular and wonderful at golden hour. The rock is polished and slippery, so wear sensible shoes.
Arrive about half an hour before sunset, and stay a little after, when the city lights come on.
3. Walk through Plaka and Anafiotika
After dark, the old lanes of Plaka feel calmer and more romantic. Climb into Anafiotika, the tiny whitewashed quarter tucked under the Acropolis rock, where stepped alleys and cats on doorsteps make it feel like an island village in the middle of the city. Keep voices low, as people live here.
4. Watch a film under the stars
In summer, roughly from late May to September, Athens is famous for its open-air cinemas: garden courtyards and rooftops with deckchairs, jasmine and, in some, a view of the Acropolis behind the screen. Films are usually shown in their original language with Greek subtitles. It is one of the most local things to do in Athens at night.
5. Have a drink on a rooftop
Many rooftop bars in Monastiraki, Plaka and around Syntagma face the Acropolis directly. A drink at sunset or after dinner is a classic. Booking a table on busy evenings is wise, and dressing a little smarter is expected at the more polished terraces. If you prefer something calmer, hotel rooftops often have the same view with a quieter crowd. In winter, many terraces add heaters and blankets, so a rooftop drink is not only a summer plan.
6. Dine late, like an Athenian
Dinner is the heart of the night here, and it starts late: nine or ten is normal. Order a few plates for the table, take your time, and let the evening stretch. Koukaki, Psyrri, Pangrati and Kolonaki all have plenty of choice, from simple tavernas to more refined restaurants. And if hunger strikes again after midnight, do as the locals do: a late souvlaki or a sweet bougatsa is part of the ritual, and plenty of places serve until the early hours.
7. Wander the neighbourhoods
Some of the best moments in Athens at night are unplanned. Psyrri hums with music and tables in the lanes, Kolonaki is all style and people-watching, and Exarchia has a bohemian, artistic edge. For a full guide to the areas, bars and clubs, see our Athens nightlife guide.
8. Listen to live music
From traditional rebetiko in small, smoky-feeling rooms to jazz, rock and contemporary Greek bands, live music is everywhere. In summer, ancient and open-air theatres host concerts and performances under the sky, a memorable way to spend an evening. Programmes change every season, so check what is on during your dates and book early for the most popular nights.
Summer or winter: how Athens at night changes
Summer evenings are long, warm and lived outdoors: hills at sunset, open-air cinemas, rooftops and dinners on the pavement, with the coast south of the city drawing crowds on hot nights. From October, the city turns inward. The light fades earlier, the Acropolis is lit by the time you finish work, and the evening moves into wine bars, music rooms and theatres. Both are wonderful; they simply ask for different plans.
9. See a show: theatre, cabaret and burlesque
From October onwards, the theatre season takes over and the city's stages fill up. If you want something sensual and theatrical rather than a club, Noir Athens is an evening of burlesque, cabaret and shadow-play in an intimate room. It is artistic and elegant, never explicit, and for guests aged 18 and over. It makes a natural centrepiece for a date night or a night out with friends. See dates and send an enquiry on the Tickets page.
10. End with a nightcap nearby
Finish close to where you had dinner or saw the show. Athens is compact, and a short walk through the warm streets to a last drink is part of the charm.
Is Athens safe at night?
The central areas where most visitors spend their evenings are generally lively and well populated late into the night. As in any big city, use common sense:
- Keep phones and wallets secure in crowded squares and on the metro.
- Stick to busy, well-lit streets late at night, and take a licensed taxi or ride app if you are going further.
- Check the last metro for your line; it does not run all night.
- Wear comfortable shoes for marble pavements and hill paths, which can be slippery.
- Carry ID if you plan to visit clubs or adults-only venues.
Plan your evening
A sunset from a hill, a slow dinner, one unforgettable thing and a nightcap under the lit Acropolis: that is Athens at night at its best. If you would like that one thing to be a show, send a booking enquiry on our Tickets page.
